The Center for Disease Control offers e-cards on their website that you can send anonymously to friends, coworkers, etc. As an admitted germaphobe, I may have to take advantage of this. Some of the classics:

Cover It!

Got Diabetes? Pregnant?

The best though:

Stay Home!

Boats Blowing Up in the Potomac http://arlingtonist.com/?p=167 http://arlingtonist.com/?p=167#comments Tue, 24 Mar 2009 17:23:17 +0000 admin http://arlingtonist.com/?p=167 Check it (no idea how reliable this is):
A television crew will create a special effects explosion on the Potomac River, near the Key Bridge, on Wednesday morning, according to city officials.

The following message has been forwarded to various neighborhood email lists by DDOT spokesperson Karyn LeBlanc.

Please be advised CBS Paramount will be filming for a television pilot titled “Washington Field” in the District for one day on Wednesday, March 25, 2009. This is a new television series about the elite Washington field office of the FBI and a team of agents with exceptional and diverse skills who are called together for only the most critical cases.

The first shot they will be shooting in the District takes place on the Potomac River just north of the Key Bridge and Jack’s Boathouse (K / Water Street, NW under the Whitehurst Freeway). In the scene, there will be six (6) sculling boats on the Potomac River and one of them blows up. The special effect simulating the explosion will occur on Wednesday March 25th between 9:30am and 12:00pm (noon).

NOTE: It will NOT blow the boat into a million little pieces. Instead there will be a 20′ to 30′ high fire ball that will last approximately two (2) seconds. All material will be vaporized and there may be a small plume of smoke. The sound will be a low thud; not a loud bang.

This is the view from my desk — hopefully I get to see some pyrotechnics:

Wake wins, takes #2 seed in ACC http://arlingtonist.com/?p=160 http://arlingtonist.com/?p=160#comments Mon, 09 Mar 2009 15:08:55 +0000 admin http://arlingtonist.com/?p=160 Wake beat Clemson 96-88. The Wake defense was horrible in the first half, but passable in the 2nd. Johnson carried everyone in the 2nd half. People talk about Teague a lot but James Johnson is the key to this team’s postseason success. He can hit shots, take anyone off the dribble, and rebounds well.

Funny comment from Teague after the game:
“Everything we do is competitive,” Teague said. “Even when it comes to talking about who has the prettiest girlfriend and things like that. We just have a competitive group of guys.”

In other news, Duke lost to UNC, so Wake locks up the #2 seed for the ACC tourney. Bracket:

Unemployment Map http://arlingtonist.com/?p=157 http://arlingtonist.com/?p=157#comments Fri, 06 Mar 2009 14:40:24 +0000 admin http://arlingtonist.com/?p=157 Check out this interactive graphic from the New York times. Some highlights:

    Arlington: 3.2%
    Alexandria: 3.4%
    Anne Arundel County, MD: 4.8%
    Manhattan, NY: 6.5%
Michigan is already bad, some counties in access of 20%. This will only get worse once GM is allowed to die.
Florida, California have moderate/high rates (7-10%) for most of their counties.

I think DC area will stay strong as the Gov’t rapidly expands. At least I hope so. Although it means housing prices are slow to come down to levels normal responsible people can afford.

Wake loses to Duke, Duke cheats as usual http://arlingtonist.com/?p=146 http://arlingtonist.com/?p=146#comments Mon, 23 Feb 2009 18:15:07 +0000 admin http://arlingtonist.com/?p=146 I’m not blaming the refs for the loss. I’ll blame our perimeter D and some poor decisions by Dino instead. But the reffing was questionable at best. As Brahsome puts it, Elliot Williams needed a passport for all the travelling he did.
