Wake loses to Duke, Duke cheats as usual

February 23rd, 2009

I’m not blaming the refs for the loss. I’ll blame our perimeter D and some poor decisions by Dino instead. But the reffing was questionable at best. As Brahsome puts it, Elliot Williams needed a passport for all the travelling he did. Video:

Great Sports Story

February 18th, 2009

I think that professional athletes are often hailed as heroes when they do the most minor good thing — but at the highschool and college level (to some extent) athletes still play for the love of the game. That’s why this story from ESPN is so great.

A player’s mom recently died, and as a result he showed up late for a game. His coach, not thinking he was coming at all, left him off the roster. When the coach went to sub him in in the 2nd quarter, it was an automatic technical, giving the opposing team 2 shots. The opposing coach picks a shooter and says, “You know you are missing these, right?” The kid nods, heads up to the floor, and intentionally misses both throws. Really good gesture.

Reminds of CP3 scoring 62 for his grandfather and missing the last free throw on purpose:

Facebook Owns Your Content, Your Soul For all Eternity

February 17th, 2009

Consumerist broke a story a few days back about changes to facebook’s Terms of Service. Basically their TOS states it owns everything you ever do, and can do whatever they want with it, FOR-EV-ER, regardless of if you leave the site. This has big implications for folks with creative content that they own posted. I.e. if I take a rad trip to Spain and post all sorts of pictures, Facebook can use those pictures for whatever they want, including selling them to Frommer’s and I’ll never get any royalties or credit.

Be careful posting your content on Facebook going forward. Tricky devils.

Here is another scary chart, this time from Simon Hunt:
Leading Economic Indicators from Simon Hunt
This chart shows the Leading Economic Indicators worldwide — the LEI is essentially an index of economic indicators leading out 6 months from now. While the US is certainly hurting, look how bad China and Russia look. It is reported that China lost 20,000,000 jobs last quarter. Makes our unemployment situation seem less dire.
